De Duitse architect Karin Hartmann onderzoekt en schrijft over bouwcultuur en de raakvlakken daarvan met feminisme. Met het boek Black Turtleneck, Round Glasses: Expanding Planning Culture Perspectives onderzoekt ze vanuit een intersectioneel feministisch perspectief de structurele oorzaken die veel vrouwen - en iedereen die geen witte cis-man is - uit het vakgebied duwen. Op dinsdag 23 mei komt ze naar Antwerpen om te spreken over haar bevindingen, waarna we met haar en met elkaar in kleine groepen in gesprek gaan.
Karin Hartmann is architect en auteur, en lid van de Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten (BDA). Sinds 2013 initieert ze artistieke en architecturale interventies en schrijft ze zowel voor vakpublicaties als voor haar eigen blog. Van 2016 tot 2021 was ze beleidsmedewerker bij het Bundesinstitut für Bautechnik, Stadtwerke und Raumentwicklung (BBSR) en werkte ze als freelancer. Karin Hartmann is eerste voorzitter van het carrièrenetwerk voor vrouwelijke architecten, architektinnen initiative nw (ai nw).
Met het boek Black Turtleneck, Round Glasses: Expanding Planning Culture Perspectives brengt Hartmann een aanklacht tegen het gebrek aan genderbalans en diversiteit in de architectuurpraktijk. Hoe kunnen architectuuronderwijs en -discussies en het zelfbeeld van de sector diverser worden? Waar ontbreken de ervaringen van een pluralistische samenleving in de gebouwde omgeving? Hoe kunnen we een culturele verandering teweegbrengen in de planning en de architectuur? We gaan verder in op het boek tijdens de PAF Boekenclub op 7 juni.

Conversation with Karin Hartmann, author Black Turtleneck, Round Glasses
German architect Karin Hartmann researches and writes about building culture and its intersections with feminism. In the book Black Turtleneck, Round Glasses: Expanding Planning Culture Perspectives, she examines from an intersectional feminist perspective the structural causes that push women - and anyone who is not a white cis-man - out of the profession. She is coming to Antwerp on Tuesday 23 May to speak about her findings, after which we will engage in small-group discussions with her and with each other.
Karin Hartmann is an architect and an author as well as associate member of the Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten (BDA). Since 2013 she has initiated artistic and architectural interventions and writes for both professional publications and her own blog. From 2016 to 2021 she was a policy officer at the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), and she has worked as a freelancer. Karin Hartmann is first chairwoman of the career network for female architects, architektinnen initiative nw (ai nw).
The book Black Turtleneck, Round Glasses: Expanding Planning Culture Perspectives describes the lack of gender balance and diversity in architectural practice. How can architectural education and discussions and the self-image of the sector become more diverse? Where are the experiences of a pluralistic society missing from the built environment? How can we bring about cultural change in planning and architecture? She will speak about her findings, after which we will engage in conversation with her and the audience. We will discuss the book further during the PAF Bookclub on the 7th of June.
