In Flanders, girls play less outside than boys. At the same time, they enjoy being outside just as much. Together with practical experts we look for answers to the question: how do we make a city for and by girls? We will look at the concrete practice of rediscovering and redesigning the physical and social aspects of public space for this underexposed group of users.

• Sabine Miedema - Kind & Samenleving (BE)
Sabine presents the main results from the participatory project 'Girls and the public space'. Kind & Samenleving worked together with girls between 10 and 12 from Antwerp, Ghent, Mechelen and Leuven. From this we extracted important policy recommendations and design principles, which formed the basis for the publication 'Girls and Public Space'.
• Imogen Clark - Make space for girls (UK)
Recent research has shown that 82% of teenage girls in the UK want to be more physically active after the pandemic. Which is great. But. where do they go? Facilities for teens in parks across the UK invariably take the form of skate parks, fenced-in fields and BMX/pump tracks. It's not that girls don't skate, it's not that girls don't play soccer, but they're not really seen when it comes to public facilities. That's why Make Space for Girls was created in 2021 to change this. Imogen Clark will explain from a UK perspective how they are trying to raise awareness to create more public space for teenage girls.
• Renet Korthals Altes (NL) & Raquel Teixeira dos Santos (PT) – Space for play
Inequity between boys and girls play starts at schoolyards! Gender separated or gender mixed play, active versus sedentary behaviour, differences in the appropriation of space.
Renet is an architect and primary school teacher, designing spaces for play since 17 years; Raquel is an urban designer focusing on placemaking and gender. They work at Space for play, improving and greening schoolyards through co-design methods. They will share how schoolyard-design can influence separated or inclusive play experiences for children
